The abdomen is considered to be the second brain of the body. This ‘abdominal brain’ also known as the enteric nervous system (ENS) is crucial in the health of our digestive tract.

Many gastrointestinal disorders like constipation, colitis, bloating and irritable bowel syndrome originate from imbalances within this branch of the nervous system.

The ENS also plays a major role in human happiness and suffering.

It contains 100 million neurons, which is more than the spinal cord and experiences and responds to emotions independently. After all, this is where the saying ‘my gut feeling’ comes from!
